Some thoughts about All-New Ultimates #1

They survived the Cataclysm that almost destroyed their universe, can they survive what comes next?

After the catastrophic event they faced, Spider-Man, Bombshell, Cloak and Dagger, Bombshell and Spider-Woman have decided to form a new team of Ultimates to save their world from any kind of menace that could threaten it. However, their first mission might be a much simpler one: Trying to clean the streets from a mysterious gang that is conducting strange experiments to the people from their city.

The Ultimates have always been a tricky franchise. They started great with Mark Millar creating a huge blockbuster and cinematic story that cemented the role of the team for the following years but in recent ones the property hasn't been that well handled thanks to authors like Jeph Loeb which made it start fading into obscurity, so much that not even a big name author like Jonathan Hickman could gather enough interest into it again. So how does new writer Michel Fiffe fares in comparison.

Well, let's just say that this is basically Brian Bendis' New Avengers to The Ultimates, meaning that this mostly focuses in street level stories instead of big and epic ones, this might not be a bad new start for the franchise but it's one that unfortunately doesn't present that much excitement for me personally. The Ultimates have usually focused in big events that affected the entire universe while this issue concentrates mostly in just a new team being formed to fight crime in the streets and the threat is not introduced in a way that makes you believe that it's really important, I think any of these heroes could have faced it individually.

The dialogue works satisfactorily though, it has nice touches of humour and helps to portray the characters in a competent way. However, I have to say that this is not exactly a good jumping-on point for readers since not much it's explained about the cast and why they're in their current situation.

Amilcar Pinna is in charge of pencils and his work is competent but not that distinctive, he tells the story competently and his characters are expressive enough but other than that it's not a style that really caughts your attention.

Decent issue but don't expect a groundbreaking new beginning.
