It depended on how he was written. Often times he would be grim and gritty. Lobo had started off as a satire of anti-heroes such as Wolverine and the Punisher in the eighties, but he ended up in the nineties becoming the very thing he was satirizing in the first place. So, saying that this Lobo takes himself "too seriously" isn't really an issue.
