The world depends on Constantine once again.
In the fight against a demon, John has accidently unleashed a virus around the city that could every person on it and he will need to use all of his skills to solve such problem.
And here we have yet another volume focused on our favorite con-job. Constantine already had a few chances to be represented since the New 52 including a series really integrated in the DCU that was successful in that regard, and yet another that tried to be more Vertigo-oriented but presented a John who was quite dumb. Now, how does new writer Simon Oliver fare?
Well, I would say he does an okay job but not exactly impressive.
For one, unlike other Rebirth books this issue is surprisingly and strangely absent of recap which is weird since Constantine is not exactly a well-known character and a bit of exploration of his past would have been useful. I mean, there are some mentions about his history but new readers will most likely be lost here.
Second, John fighting a demon and using his brain to win is classic stuff but the way how he does it is kinda easy and not that imaginative. Even the last Constantine volume presented more interesting solutions and that was where John caused more problems than he solved.
Finally, the DCU seems to be integrated here but I'm tired of most of them hating on John. Yes, he's not the easiest guy to get along with but at this point I just want some variety in the characterization.
Moritat handles the art and his style is interesting but it can be a bit too cartoony at times at depicting some characters but the tone is appropriate at least.
This is not bad but is not great, hope it gets better.
