Who is the new Superman of China?
Kenan Kong is nothing but an arrogant bully. However, after he surprisingly faces a supervillain some people will start to believe that he's hero and their willing to gave him the power to be even more than that.
Here we go again. Gene Luen Yang already had an opportunity to handle the Superman franchise and as you may remember, it didn't turn out so well, not all of it was his ault obviously since he was working in an ill-fated forced direction but still, his work suffered from poor pacing, awkward narration and underdeveloped ideas. Nonetheless, he has the opportunity to write about his own creation this time with a premise that is closer to him and with more creative freedom. So, is it better than his last attempt?
Well, technically yes but not by much.
The first thing that you will notice is that the main character is a complete douchebag, and not even an interesting or funny douchebag but a completely stereotypical and derivative douchebag. Sure, Yang is trying to give him some "depth" by creating a tragic background around him to justify his actions but once again, tragedy doesn't necessarily makes a character more compelling nor likable and it definitely doesn't give it a reason to act like an asshole. This is especially bad since the protagonist was presented as a complete unlikable prick since page 1.
The story behind is also not that appealing. It does the stuff it needs to set this status quo for the character but is devoid of any surprises. The narration suffers from other problems like saying more than it should at times and it becomes tiring quite quickly.
Viktor Bogdanovic's artwork on the other hand, is gorgeous. I have become a huge fan of his expressive characters and vibrant style, the storytelling is pretty solid as well.
Sadly, he's not enough to make this take special. I wasn't expecting much but even my low expectations were not met.
