Can Batgirl start a new adventure?
Barbara has decided to travel to Japan to meet people who can help her become a better hero. However, once that she meets with an old friends things may get more complicated.
This series starts once again. People who are familiar with this incarnation of the character in particular know that Barbara was handled first at the beginning of the New 52 by Gail Simone with an overly dark tone and later by Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher and Babs Tarr who compensated by creating more lighthearted adventures. Now, this is written by Hope Larson, how does it fare?
I would say surprisingly well.
For one, the writer is trying to give the story a similar tone from the last run in Batgirl, a lighthearter tone with Barbara hanging out with friends and having fun being a superhero. However, it takes a different route as well by giving the book a greater sense of adventure and exploring the world of Japan and how it can inspire Barbara with their own kind of heroes.
The dialogue is pretty natural and helps to create a sense of realism to the interactions the protagonist has with the rest of the cast, especially one of Babs' old friends who seems to be an entertaining, yet mysterious person by himself. Babs' eidetic memory is implemented nicely in story as well. The narration is not perfect though since at times the writer uses thought balloons that feel pretty awkward.
The plot progresses at a nice pace with some hints about where is going being left and it certainly seems interesting.
Rafael Albuquerque handles the artwork and is simply fantastic by using both lighthearted and dark tones when is necessary and all of it looks quite polished. The representation of Babs' eidetic memory is also accurate just like the storytelling.
Pretty promising beginning, hope the next issue arrives soon.
