Some thoughts about Superman: American Alien #5

Superman is ready to start fighting for the people but he might want to start thinking on a better strategy.

Clark has finally decided to become a vigilante to help others but he soon will realize that this might be more complicated than he imagined, especially if he's going against someone as intelligent as Lex Luthor.

Yes, this series still delivers a lot of entertainment.

Max Landis continues his story this time focusing on Clark's first steps as Superman. In this chapter Landis creates a pretty familiar plot, is pretty much the kind of origin story for the character that you have seen before. The motivations are the same, Clark still wants to help people just because he's a nice person while there are others who don't trust him or also want to help him. What makes this a bit more unique are the little twists that Landis offers here.

The way how people start reacting to the arrival of Superman is pretty realistic. The way how Lois talks about him mentioning things as "he's just doing it for the fame, maybe he wants to trademark his own name to get lots of merchandising" is a fun and interesting response. Luthor's answer is even better due that he pretty much manipulates the law and the nature of Clark as a vigilante in his favor. This is actually a pretty logical development and explores what would happen if someone like Superman appeared in real life.

Francis Manapul handles the artwork and is pretty good looking with beautiful characters and great storytelling skill that creates a lot of interesting layouts.

Definitely enjoyable, shame this title is about to end.
