Some thoughts about Batman V Superman

History is about to begin and end.

Superman is being both praised and feared around the world after his battle with Zod and a young man named Lex Luthor thinks he can exploit that in his favor by manipulating one of the most dangerous men alive to face him.

Well, here it is ladies and gentlemen. One of the most anticipated superhero films in a while.

I suppose I don't need to tell you how incredibly hyped this movie was since its announcement. Since Man of Steel was released, there was a huge talk about how DC would continue their big screen expansion after Marvel seemingly having a monopoly in such medium and here's the answer once again handled by Zack Snyder. What's the verdict?

It's enjoyable but not without its flaws.

Let's talk about the premise first which I think everyone, even people who are not familiar with the comics can guess: The first battle between Superman and Batman. Such idea has been explored countless of times with one character often being the winner (strangely enough, Batman is that character) and this movie is heavily inspired in one of their most famous encounters: The Dark Knight Returns. Everything from the style to the scope of the fight to even some parts of the characterization seem to reflect that but it still takes its own liberties which I think work decently for the most part.

However, don't be fooled by the initial premise due that this movie is much, much more than that. This is the story where the entire DCU is being developed basically. Several mentions from a much bigger universe are being mentioned including short appearances from characters like Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg as well as teasers of a more dangerous threat coming which most certainly will involve Darkseid makes this a pretty content packed experience, even more than Man of Steel.

And of course one of the most hyped aspects of the film was the appearance of Wonder Woman as one of the main characters and credit where credit is due, the character is portrayed nicely by Gal Gadot who surprised me about how fitting she is for the role despite of initial doubts, she's able to give the character the sense of glamour and power that she deserves. Her inclusion reveals interesting info about her background while showing some hints about a more compelling depiction in the future. Not complaints about this really.

About the portrayals of the characters in the title, they work solidly enough. Henry Cavill is a good actor who I think depicts the role of this Superman in particular in an adequate way, I guess it depends if you like this incarnation of the character in particular, is personally not one of my favorites but I don't hate it really. Ben Affleck as Batman works much better than expected, the guy is surprisingly fitting for the role and gives it the kind of brooding tone that is always required for it, not to mention that the interactions between Alfred, played by Jeremy Irons, and him are pretty enjoyable and easily one of the best dynamics between the characters, I hope this is explored more in the future. No problems so far.

However, here comes the biggest problem about the cast: Lex Luthor.

Jesse Eisenberg plays the overly juvenile and eccentric version of the character and quite frankly is not appropriate. Say whatever you want about the portrayal of Superman in this line but at least it makes sense for the context of the world he lives in. The Luthor here is pretty goofy,  geeky and crazy, and I don't think this kind of traits give the character justice nor fits particularly well in this darker and more serious universe. He's pretty much a less insane version of the Joker but a less insane version of the Joker is still pretty insane and not fitting for someone who always had a misguiden but quite rational mentality like Lex. He quite honestly feels more like he wants to play The Doctor from Doctor Who.

The plot progresses in a bit of a erratic pace. There are some interesting bits here and there before the climax of the story but some of them are to be frank, a bit boring, they're not outstandingly boring to the point that you will fall to sleep though but there are kinda dull.

I also have some problems about how quickly the fight between Superman and Batman escalated. There's a solid justification from Bruce's side considering the visions he starts having but I think that Clark should have been a bit more calm about the whole deal, he does try to talk to him at the beginning but that's quickly forgotten in the middle of the battle. However, at least there was a logic way for such conflict to end.

Then, it comes by far the most impressive part of the film: The battle against Doomsday.

I'm not kidding when I say that this particular fight delivered everything that I wanted and more, if the movie would have been only about this moment I would have been satisfied and while some of the rest of the story have its problems, this segment is simply flawless.

The fight is EPIC in a sense of scale with every member from the Trinity showing their skills trying to stop the creature and it works So. Damn. Well. The special effects certainly play a huge role on it and I hope the people involved continue their work in future installments because it was glorious. The upcoming Justice League movie must have this kind of action scenes or it will be a complete letdown.

Overall, I think that is an entertaining flick as far as big blockbuster movies go. Is not a masterpiece mind you and it has obvious problems but if you want to see your favorite DC superheroes in the big screen in one of the grandest battles ever then you won't be disappointed.
