Some thoughts about Transformers: Deviations

What would happen if Optimus Prime would have never died?

In a multiverse full of infinite possibilities, there's a time and place where Optimus actually survived his final fight against Megatron and that brings different consequences.

"Different consequences" my ass. This might be one of the most derivative and predictable things I've read.

Brandon Easton creates an alternate reality where, as the premise says, Optimus never died in the 1986 Transformers movie. There are some interesting aspects here mind you, like how Starscream takes Megatron's place as Unicron's herald but aside from that, everything is completely by the numbers.

The story doesn't take a really different route in terms of plot or characterization. Optimus remains the same no matter the reality and this outcome doesn't change his perspective as a leader. Now that I think about it, his whole survival doesn't even affect the story due that he's barely relevant to the main plot due that Hot Rod is the one who puts an end to Unicron once again. Speaking of which, Hot Rod is portrayed as more incompetent than his original self since the writer made a tiny moment from the movie into his whole characterization, about how he accidentally let Megatron kill Optimus (which wasn't even how it happened) and thus, he only makes bad decisions that kills everyone until the end where he sacrifices himself to save Unicron. Geez.

Priscilla Tramontano handles the artwork and is solid enough but not partcularly impressive. The characters are expressive but the style is not that distinctive nor beautiful.

This was a great opportunity to explore new facets of the characters and ramifications but alas, it didn't happen.
