Some thoughts about Black Widow #1

Black Widow is on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D. but for what reason?

Natasha has just infiltrated one of the most powerful organizations in the world to rob something so precious that all of them are willing to go after her to retrieve it.

This issue marks the beginning of the critically acclaimed creative team of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's work on Black Widow. The creators have been famous for their revitalization of Daredevil, can they repeat their success here?

Well, based on this first issue I'm not so sure.

I don't mean that the issue is bad by itself but there's not a lot to demonstrate that this will be great.

For one, the story that Waid came up with is not really particularly interesting nor deep. The premise is simply: "Black Widow steals something from S.H.I.E.L.D. and then runs", that's all. It doesn't offer a lot of characterization aside from the typical moments where Natasha shows how competent she's at her job, is not really complex in that regard.

In terms of the plot, there's barely any. There's a mystery I guess about what Natasha stole and why is so important but is overall quite simplistic.

In fact I would call this the Chris Samnee's show because he was the star here. The storytelling is incredible during the action scenes where he presents every scene in a great scale that almost felt like a movie. The style is also beautiful.

Not a lot to love aside from the art. I was expecting more to be quite honest.
