What is the true nature of the Joker?
Batman has been fighting with his archenemy for years with barely having any knowledge about his past but now he will learn that there were even more terrible thing behind the origin of the man who laughs.
I'm going to get this out of the way: I don't think I like this direction for the Joker.
Is an interesting one mind you. Scott Snyder is trying to give the Joker a bigger sense of importance by making him play a role in the hole history of Gotham City while creating a supernatural and horror oriented background for him that makes him more terrifying than ever.
But that's the problem, he's the Joker. The most popular and recognizable villain of all time, giving him a greater sense of importance just doesn't really work since the fame of the character is already out of proportions and it doesn't need to become bigger deal than he actually is.
Plus, the supernatural direction is just so contrived that I hope that this is just a trick.
There are some creative aspects like how the Joker's virus transmits due to laughter which is a pretty ingenious way to include it into the story. Also, there's a really good moment involving Joe Chill.
Greg Capullo's artwork is outstanding and he continues to bring the best of this series thanks to his clear, detailed and beautiful artstyle.
The backup is once again written by James Tynion IV which still continues to play with the supernatural side of the Joker, is not a bad story but repetitive at this point. John McCrea is on art duties and his work is pretty adequate for the tale thanks to his deformed characters.
Decent I would say if you enjoy this route, for me not so much.
