Some thoughts about Batman Beyond #1

A new Batman has risen in the future.

Tim Drake is decided to take on the legacy of Terry McGuinnis and continue his mission by trying to save the future from Brother Eye. However, if he wants to succeed he will need the help from both new and old allies.

Coming straight from the weekly series Futures End arrives this new series focusing on a beloved property but this time with brand new direction. As most people should know, Terry McGuinnis died in Futures End and he was replaced by Tim Drake as the protagonist for this book.

I got to be honest here, I don't like this direction by itself since I don't think that Tim is really fit for the role of Batman Beyond and I would have prefered to see Terry as the main character. Nonetheless, I'm decided to see this series for what it is and not judge it because of my preconceived opinions, so how does it fares?

It's... okay.

Dan Jurgens pretty much continues the story practically immediately after the end of Futures End and gives us enough information about what's happening in this timeline. We also see several familiar faces from the old T.V. show and even other classic characters so fans won't get lost about what's happening.

It's also good to see that the author is even acknowledging the concerns of a lot of fans about the change of protagonists by giving some insight about what the rest of the cast thinks (including Terry's little brother). It's good to know that at least the book is self-aware.

Still, I honestly don't see enough interesting stuff to be invested into this new title. Characterization is solid, worldbuilding is okay, story is decent and those are some of the problems, nothing is particularly impressive.

In fact, the most impressive things about this book is the art, Bernard Chang does a beautiful job in pencils with his vibrant style, clear storytelling and gorgeous characters, definitely the best part of this issue.

So overall, I would say that this opening chapter gets the job done but don't expect anything spectacular.
