There's a brand new Earth 2 but sadly is still full of the problems of the previous one.
The Wonders survived to see the birth of another era but it's not as bright as they would have wished for. Now they will need to fight for yet another danger that is approaching.
Okay, you know how things roll. Daniel H. Wilson was involved in the disaster that we know as World's End and in fact, based on his comic work I'm assuming that many of the flaws from that series were actually his fault, bad characterization, pacing and continuity being the most noticeable. So taking that in mind, how does this issue fares in comparison?
Well, it's better but that's hardly an accomplishment.
For one, this issue is focused on two sections: Present and past. The present sections are about how the heroes are adapting to the new world while the past segments concentrate on when they arrived to the world. This doesn't really help the pacing mind you but at least is not as bad as in World's End, it's readable.
The characterization is okay for the most part, there are no great moments in terms of portrayals but there's nothing wrong yet.
And here comes the biggest problem: There's nothing really great here.
Sure, people want to have high hopes for this title after all the things that almost ruined the franchise but in terms of quality, this issue is simply lackluster.
Presentation-wise is pretty weak, the whole opening chapter doesn't offer great moments not surprising scenes of storytelling, is quite mediocre. The dialogue don't help matters since it can get a bit heavyhanded at times.
Plus, the story itself barely progresses. We know a few things that happened earlier and what is currently happening but speaking especifically about the plot moving, it doesn't.
Jorge Jimenez is in charge of art duties and despite that I love his work, I don't think he's the best for this series since his storytelling is not that clear Wilson's writing is pretty awkward by itself already. Besides, I can't help but think that he has gotten accustomed to the World's End format and for that reason his art looks kinda rushed at times.
This is pretty underwhelming overall. People, just because you want the Earth 2 franchise succeed doesn't mean that you need to accept everything that is thrown at you, there are better books in which you can use your time and money.
