Some thoughts about Black Canary #1

Black Canary might be the most dangerous band in America but for what reason?

Dinah Drake's life has been messy for a while and she's decided to forget her past and start once again with a new group of friends and new career. However, she will soon learn that trouble always has a way to find her.

This is the beginning of a new series and a whole new direction for Black Canary. Dinah had a couple of series/miniseries in the past but never in this way where it's actually focused on the life of a rock band and it's also handled by one of the creators who developed this direction for her in Batgirl, Brenden Fletcher. So, does this new premise delivers?

Well, I would happily say it does.

From the opening pages you can certainly see a pretty interesting presentation for the series that evokes a lot of style that is somehow reminiscent of the one that you find in the current run of Batgirl which is understandable considering the writer. There's even a character from Gotham Academy in the cast which again, is most likely because Brenden Fletcher is also the writer from that series. Fortunately, these choices allow for a cohesive connection between all the different titles.

Dinah shows a lot of personality and the author takes a logical choice with the characterization based on the different things that have been happening during her life, nothing is ignored and you will even find some surprises when some aspects of her past are mentioned. The rest of the cast seem interesting too and one of them might be actually more intriguing that you would expect.

Plus, there are aliens/demons here. This is not really your typical street-level story.

Annie Wu is on art duties and her work is quite fitting for the tone of the story. She has a pretty unique style that makes each of the characters look appealing in their own different ways and creates a nice atmosphere for the whole "Rock band" premise.

Pretty promising beginning. It truly makes me want to know more about the future.
