Some thoughts about Constantine: The Hellblazer #1

Constantine is trying to escape from what he deserves as usual.

Nothing is normal in John's life, even when he tries to do common things like taking a drink or flirting with a guy, the strange automatically is attracted to him. Now, he will soon realize that all his actions will come back to hunt him.

Before talking about this new series let's do a little recap shall we?

The first Hellblazer book was one of the most critically acclaimed series and was written by some of the most relevant authors from their respective eras. Then the book was relaunched simply as Constantine and handled by Ray Fawkes which quite really was one of the most underrated books from DC's line, it developed the supernatural side from the DCU pretty well.

Now this title is technically the third volume focusing on John Constantine, a man who uses his wit to fight against the dark forces from this world and this time is written by Ming Doyle and James Tynion IV. How does it fares?

I would say that it's a solid attempt but not particularly impressive.

The authors continues to focus on a supernatural angle while also developing John's character which fortunately seems to be on-point so far. Constantine sounds like Constantine and that's one of the most important aspects from any series featuring him.

The dialogue is well-done for the most part although the early narration when John talks to a girl seems pretty forced. Then again, once that he starts flirting with a guy, it gets much more natural and it made me like the scene much more.

Some of the classic themes continue to be used like how magic has a price and John usually has the to be the one to pay it. Really, this pretty much is summarizing the problem here, in terms of ideas this series doesn't deliver anything new, we have seen all of these things just in the previous book (even the protagonist's bisexuality was featured there), as a brand new series it doesn't offer enough to get old readers attention.

The artwork is handled by Riley Rossmo and his work is pretty adequate here, his style is really unique that allows for some interesting visuals and panels.

Overall, this is a nice beginning but it doesn't really get that much of my attention.
