Some thoughts about Doctor Fate #1

A new Doctor Fate must rise no matter what.

Khalid is just a common Muslim kid who has found himself in a stranger world that he could have ever imagined and now the forces of fate have chosen him to be its savior. Is he ready for the responsibility?

This... wasn't really what I was expecting.

You should know at this point that I've no good history with Paul Levitz. Being either Worlds' Finest or anything else, I always thought that his stories where some of the blandest things that you could find anywhere with poor plot progression and shallow characterization. The simply couldn't create something interesting to save his life.

Then what the hell happened here?

People, this might have been one of the best things that I've read this week. The premise is quite interesting, it's about a world that might seem normal at first but there are a lot of weird events that makes it different from usual and all of them are mostly based on the magical beings that exist here which of course, revolve around the Helmet of Fate and who it chooses to be its owner.

There's a great sense of style in this issue. Like the kind that you would find in some indie books, it's a pretty modern direction that it's really odd considering that it's developed by an old-school writer who hasn't really impressed in these aspects in the past few years. This is pretty much DC's Ms. Marvel book and no, I'm not saying that because both characters are from the same race and religion but because of the similar feel they have.

It's necessary to mention that this is not the same Khalid who has been appearing in Earth 2 and frankly I think it's for the better. By not being forced to follow continuity, Levitz has brought a story where he can play free with origin, characterization and worldbuilding.

Sonny Liew is in charge of the artwork and his style complements the script brilliantly. It's kind of cartoony but not particularly exaggerated, it makes the world really distinctive and the storytelling is really precise and clear.

TL, DR: Who is this guy and what has he done to Paul Levitz?! (You know, forget that, I don't care what happened to the real Paul Levitz, I like this guy better).

Excellent issue, one of the best this week.

  1. Huh..this was actually pretty good!..I just felt that the train scene was a bit weird with no one even trying to save the girl but aside from that it was solid

  2. Yeah, I quite liked that scene. I suppose most people were too scared to move aside from Khalid.
