Superman is dead but for how long?
The Clark from this universe perished trying to save the world and now is up to another Clark to protect it from whatever threat that is coming after it.
Well, this certainly seems like a Rebirth in more ways that one would expect.
Peter Tomasi is joined by Patrick Gleason as writers which is a pretty interesting decision. Tomasi handled the storyarc that created the set-up for this new direction (despite that it wasn't the best by itself) so is logical for him to be here. Gleason's inclusion however, makes things a bit more intriguing, he's usually known for his fantastic art but he also had an opportunity to write in Robin: Son of Batman which I didn't cover but I have heard good things about it. So how does this first entry fares?
Solidly enough I would say.
The focus goes to the Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths Superman obviously preparing him to receive the mantle in upcoming issues. This has been teased already but the writers do a pretty clear job at showing his motivations to become such person and connecting him with parts of this universe like Lana Lang.
Plus, the writers make the logical connection about remembering how that Superman also died at the hands of Doomsday in his universe, the event is nicely recreated in these pages, which developes the idea of the Clark from this universe coming back to life which will most certainly become a plot-point over this new era.
Doug Mahnke handles the artwork and is really good looking with beautiful characters and pretty clear storytelling.
A solid beginning I would say, just hope the rest of the story continues this way.
