Some thoughts about The Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade #1

What made Batman the way he is now?

Bruce knows that Jason is not ready to fight against crime on his own in Gotham City, especially considering that the Joker is planning to destroy everything. However, Bruce's actions might push the kid to prove himself.

This is basically the prologue of the The Dark Knight Returns and in that sense is pretty successful.

Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello bring a story where they focus on the dynamic between Bruce and Jason, about how Bruce is starting to feel his age and is afraid that Jason might not be ready to take his place. The characterization is wonderful, the writers manage to make you invested in the dynamic between the two protagonists while showing several of the same themes from the original DKR and delivering more depth about the background of that story. It certainly makes you invested in what happened and what caused Bruce's downfall.

The antagonists are also nicely presented. The Joker is depicted in a terrifying manner by being cold and calculating being able to manipulate several people around him including the heroes despite that they might not know it. Other classic villains are well-portrayed like Poison Ivy and Killer Croc, the latter being heavily inspired by Azzarello's Joker book.

John Romita Jr. handles the artwork and is a pretty good effort with expressive characters and on-point storytelling.

Really enjoyable read, one of the best things coming from this particular universe recently.
