Some thoughts about Superman #49

Superman will have to risk his life to win.

The Kryptonite that Clark has been using has made his powers return but at a cost and if he wants to keep fighting he will have to sacrifice yet another life.

Some things didn't work but aside from them, this issue really did it for me.

Gene Luen Yang delivers a new chapter and I'm not sure if is his final one but he certainly a lot of the plot points that he created during his run. I'm not a fan of some of scenes he wrote here like how Diana refers to Clark as "Kal-El" which is completely wrong considered how their relationship was based on. Also, a kid makes a Super Mario reference which is hilariously bad considering that kids wouldn't even admit to play Mario games these days because they consider them too "kiddie" and thus lame. Finally, Mister Terrific still appears here and I just don't understand why, I don't know if anyone has told Yang that he is in Earth 2.

But aside from that, I liked several of the scenes. The characterization was pretty spot-on while the writer managed to create some emotional moments between Clark and Diana and Clark and Lois. Not only that but he also made the final moments of Metallo pretty powerful while at the same time giving a statement about what Superman represents.

Jack Hebert handles the artwork and is pretty good. The action scenes are really intense and work nicely in a huge sense of scale, is probably one of the best parts of the issue.

Overall, this was probably one of the best chapters from this run, not bad.
