Hellcat needs to escape from her past and live her life the best way she can.
Patsy Walker might not be the most powerful or popular superheroine but she's decided to help others her way and more importantly, get an actual job.
A bit of backstory before we begin. Patsy Walker started her life as a comic character but actually not a superhero comic character but she was more of a slice of life protagonist a la Archie before becoming a proper superheroine. Now, with her recently gained popularity thanks to the Netflix show Jessica Jones, she's able to sustain her own book and handled by Kate Leth. Does it delivers?
Well, so far so good.
Leth is able to inject a lot of charm and personality into the character and her world. Is certainly a more lighthearted tone for Hellcat and is one that fits perfectly the sensibilities of the creator and is surprisingly a nice fit for the protagonist too. The writer explores Patsy's past as a comic character and manages to incorporate such history into the story which manages to play up nicely with the comedic and cartoony style the book uses.
The portrayals are pretty solid. Patsy is an immediately likable character while the rest of the cast including She-Hulk and a few others got a smile from my face. The tone definitely suits them.
About the story, there's nothing too complicated but is appropriate for the slice of life direction the title is taking.
The art is handled by Brittney L. Williams and is perfect for the kind of story Leth is creating. Is cartoony, expressive and quite appealing. One of the strongest aspects here.
This is not your typical superhero comic so if you expect Hellcat to start fighting random villains you will be disappointed but if you want a more unique take on her then you will get your money worth.
