Some thoughts about Batman #44

Batman will need to solve a murder case just as usual.

A 15 years kid has apparently been killed in the streets of Gotham and Bruce will need to use his best skills to find the culprit but this could turn out to be more complicated than he expected.

Well, this was an interesting story but not without flaws.

For one, this is a collaboration between Scott Snyder and Brian Azzarello and it definitely reads like one. There's a pretty dark atmosphere surrounding a story that takes place in the past and the writers manage to exploit the premise nicely enough by playing with the usual notion that Batman always needs to find a culprit but there might not necessarily be one. There's even a little scene that could be taken as a sociocommentary and it's executed in a subtle way.

However, there are parts that reflect some typical things from each author's writing. We see classic Snyderisms like when Batman starts remembering things he used to do as a child (which is tiring at this point) and Azzarellisms like when the writing starts playing with words (which is not necessarily a bad thing but is still noticeable). Also, Snyder connects this serious story with a villain he's currently using in this series and seems a bit out of place.

Jock is in charge of the artwork and the storytelling is fantastic. There's a really gothic feel that makes the plot even more interesting to read and every scene is depicted powerfully.

This is still a solid story despite of some complaints. You might enjoy it.
