Some thoughts about Superman #43

Lois has learned Superman's identity, what could be the result?

Lois and Clark have made up after she tried to reveal his secret. However, their problems are not going to stop there since the organization that has been persecuting Clark is ready to torture him unless Lois takes a desperate decision.

Sorry, I'm not buying this.

I'm talking about Lois characterization. Gene Luen Yang is trying to make us sympathize with Lois after she tore Clark's clothes apart in front of everybody by making both of them connect and saying that she "won't tell Clark's secret" when she already basically revealed it to the world! The situation where these two are connecting and acting like nothing happened after that feels simply forced and unnatural.

Speaking of forced, the author is trying to recreate the romantic relationship between them and I'm able to notice this because the writing is practically yelling about it. This is not how friends act (check Clark and Lana's interaction in Action Comics as an example), this is a pretty heavyhanded attempt to putting them back together and makes no sense because they weren't that attracted to each other in the first place (nor were that close as friends for that matter). I love Lois and Clark romance, I prefer them that way but not with this execution.

One could also come-up with the case that Lois is only interested in Clark now that she knows that he's Superman but I'm going to avoid that. There's also a segment where Lois says: "Tell me you wouldn't have risked dozens of lives to save me" to justify her actions and the answer is a huge NO, Superman always finds a way to save people without risking others.

The writing is for the most part good. Aside from the blunt delivery in characterization, the dialogue flows nicely and the characters talk naturally for the most part. The story is not bad by any means aside from the problems already mentioned.

John Romita Jr. continues to impress in art duties thanks to his strong storytelling and I'm actually surprised about how much he has improved.

I'm on the fence about this issue. Not sure if I can recommend it.

  1. Look Superman is not some green hero from 5 years ago, He has other friends than Lois. He has friends like freaking Cyborg for example. This whole thing just reeks of stupidity. Then we have Lois swooning for him because she found out he is Superman. Look I don't know what Yang thinks equates romance or friendship but in my book I want build up. I don't want forced. I also do not really like what Lois is doing. Friendship respects boundaries and Lois has no boundaries. She is highly inappropriate in terms of the way she is behaving with someone she never was that warm or tactile or even familiar with and the fact she knows he has a person in his life? It makes it seem as if she wants to to muddy the waters despite knowing he with Diana. And Yang is really showing poor form in my opinion stooping to that. Because it makes Lois look a bit of a bitch and Clark a dick when he has a partner who has done nothing but be supportive and put her life on the line for him since they began their series. If DC wants to break up Supes and Wondy, show some respect for the character you're using by breaking them up and then have Lois and Clark carry on. It's the utmost disrespect to try to pretend it's friendship when it is hamfisted forced trite romantic love triangles he's trying to play with. Doing this pleases no one usually.

  2. Yeah, I have to agree with every point. The characterization and direction are simply off.
