Some thoughts about Superman #42

What revealed the truth about Superman?

Lois has been tracking the identity of the hero since he appeared on the scene. However, he finally will realize that he has been closer than she could have imagined and when this happens, the rest of the world will also realize the same.

This crossover continues and writer Gene Luen Yang does his best to present an explanation for the current events and sadly it's not executed in the best way possible.

The reveal is exactly what has been rumoured since the beginning of this story and quite frankly it doesn't do justice to Lois' character. The way how the truth is uncover presents Lois as pretty stupid and unlikable due that the only thing she cares about is that Clark has been lying to her (which doesn't make much sense since they're not that close in this continuity) and she's not concerned about how the world would also learn his secret once that she simply tears his clothes off revealing his costume in public.

Really? Tearing his costume off in public? Not even Jimmy Olsen from the previous continuity was this dumb. I feel that the writer could have presented this situation in a more interesting and logical way but the way how it's done here is simply blunt and uncreative. The author tries to present Lois in a more likable light at the end but at this point is not enough.

The rest of the issue is solid though. There is a decent amount of interesting concepts like a crime syndicate (no, not that one) that is based on information and is certainly connected to the current story. The ideas by themselves are nice enough.

John Romita Jr. presents a good work on art duties by depicting the story in a clear way and showing exciting action scenes and great details.

I still would say that this a decent issue but not if you're a Lois fan.

  1. I did not like the ripping his clothes off either...wonder if a male character tore off a female clothes to see her suit what we would say. Strange sort of empowerment there. Clark last time came across as slightly low IQ to facilitate Lois in this story and not sure why we need Yang to play with cliched love triangles when Clarjk is supposed to be in love with another woman. Lobdell did that in his run and it's just stupid soap opera nonsense as far as I am concerned. You can write a deep friendship well without pandering like that . Also did Lois suddenly show some romantic interest in him now she knows he is Superman? I was like wait...that is a 180...he is the same guy...she comes across as someone who really would not care for Clark as much unless he was Superman. But then the appeal of Lois always struggled to see it. She is no better than the Lois of the 90ies. In fact she is very Golden Age Lois. I think the character is simply someone who always just lucked out the guy she fancied was super. If Clark was just an average joe I never got the impression she would be interested in him.

    1. I agree Lois could have definitely been written better here. Maybe confronting Clark in a more private and personal way but not confronting him directly in front of everyone like a whiny child.
