Some thoughts about Aquaman Annual #1

What can Aquaman expect from the future?

Arthur and Mera are decided to spend the rest of their lives together and that could lead to the happiest time they have ever experience but not without a price.

The Annuals continue and once again is dedicated to another one-and-done story.

First of all, this is pretty much inspired by the classic Superman story For the Man who has Everything by Alan Moore, almost touching each and every of the same themes.

Second, that doesn't necessarily make it a cheap ripoff.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson brings the tale that implements familiar ideas like the Black Mercy, even the fact that in the future Arthur and Mera could have a child. While the premise has been used in the past before and the writer does evoke some of those ideas a bit too closely, he still manages to deliver accurate and strong character moments based on the relationship between Arthur and Mera. Even the involvement of other members from the Justice League is handled appropriately and enforce the whole idea.

Plus, there are also interesting references here and there. The most obvious being Arthur Jr. (who is called "Tom" here for some reason) but there are others like how future Arthur looks like his 90s version. The plot progresses at a solid pace and while the conclusion is predictable, is still satisfying.

Max Fiumara handles the art and is... odd looking at times. It has a distinctive style but the characters can look deformed during some scenes.

Not really original but still worth checking out.
