Is the world ready for Black Lightning?
Jefferson is trying to make a name for himself once again but people still don't trust him and things will get even worse once that a villain decides to end his career.
A new miniseries has arrived about one of DC's classic characters. Black Lightning had a brief appearance in the New 52 but nothing too relevant. This time though, he's handled by his creator Tony Isabella and it seems like a nice start.
The story is focused on themes about race which makes sense since this is Black Lightning we're talking about and he was DC's most important black character for a while (not to mention that his name was clearly inspired by blaxplotation films). Fortunately though, these ideas are not that heavyhanded and they're implemented in an appropriate enough way that is helped by the natural dialogue and solid characterization.
Speaking of the characterization, is pretty fitting since the writer explores Jefferson's background, about his connection with his family and how that cements his role as a superhero while also reintroducing his archenemy Tobias Whale in a way that retcons the previous appearance of the character but at least there's an explanation behind (which is more than I can say for other series like Green Arrow). All of this escalates adequately toward the end.
Clayton Henry's artwork is pretty good looking with a clean style, expressive character and clear storytelling.
Enjoyable overall, will keep checking this out.
