Can Batman exist in the mind of a boy?
Bruce has always been a fan of comics, particularly the ones featuring the Dark Knight. However, once that the tragic loss of his parents occurs, he will realize how dangerous things can actually get.
The beginning of a new miniseries is here and is written by none other than Kurt Busiek. For people who don't know, Busiek is responsible for many classic stories in the superhero genre, particularly The Avengers. However, I've always felt like he's better suited for out of continuity or elseworlds stories where he can actually go beyond the limitations of the characters (although some of his flaws also include that he tends to overglorify classic characters), Astro City and Superman: Secret Identity are good examples of that and fortunately he follows a similar path here.
Going full meta with the premise about the parallels between comics and the real world, Busiek creates a story where he immediately shows the similarities that exist in young Bruce's and Batman's lives but he thankfully doesn't create a identical case and actually uses realistic events about how a true murder case would happen. Is just a house robbery, one that can become even worse for everyone involved and this makes the plot much more relatable.
The characters once again receive a pretty natural depiction, this is especially clear in Bruce's case who acts like a normal child and makes even more tragic the events are happening around him. The rest of the cast also act like normal people who act times don't know how to handle the situation while others are just too cruel about it.
There's obviously a certain supernatural element about it and it will most likely continue to be explored.
John Paul Leon handles the art and is really distinctive with a perfect implementation of classic comic book style and modern artwork while the transition between those segments is done in a coherent way.
Interesting beginning, need to see more.
