Some thoughts about Justice League: Darkseid War Special #1

What's the story behind Grail?

Darkseid's daughter has been kept away from the Amazons for the long time despite of her connection with them and now she wants to be better than them.

Well, this certainly offered more background about this character but I don't find it particularly interesting.

Geoff Johns brings this special that explores more about Grail, about her origins and her real objectives which reveal more about her personality and motivations but ultimately doesn't make her more compelling as a character. Sure, Johns wants to expand her as a more credible threat but I still can't feel invested in her.

The one-shot also focuses on Jessica Cruz and how her connection to Power Ring affects her, I think I liked her section better than Grail's but again, is also not that interesting. There are some decent moments about how Volthoom's ring works but aside from that there's not a lot to see. It does feel like Johns is preparing Jessica for her upcoming ongoing though.

Ivan Reis, Paul Pelletier and Oscar Jimenez handle the artwork. Reis' segments worked the best thanks to his beautiful characters and big settings but Pelletier also does a good job with his own style, Jimenez' work seems a bit rough at times with too much detail that somehow makes his characters a bit hard to read.

To be honest, this almost felt like yet another chapter of Darkseid War more than a proper special since it didn't offer a lot of content nor it was that enjoyable. Decent I would say.
