Some thoughts about Nightwing #30

Can Nightwing return to be who he was after the things that happened?

The Crime Syndicate were able to defeat him and he even died at one point, Dick Grayson has passed for some of the most difficult times in his life and both Batman and him know that to stop this from happening again, he will have to become stronger, no matter if he has to abandon everything to doing so.

This is basically a prelude from the upcoming series Grayson written by the same authors from this issue, Tim Seeley and Tom King. I have talked before about whole this volume of Nightwing never managed to rise above from being simply decent so do these authors succeed at becoming better than that?

Well, for the most part yes, but I have some issues with it.

The authors certainly know the background of the character and both explore the consequences of the attack that Dick suffered during Forever Evil as well as how that changes will change his life.

My major problem here resides in the first part of the story that focuses in both Bruce and Dick while their fighting to prove that the latter continues to be strong enough to be in the game. I thought it was a bit forced and Bruce pretty much appears like an abusive father at this point, not to mention that making Alfred believe that Dick is dead is a bit cruel and kinda out of character after the things the man has done for them.

The last segment however works great since Dick starts narrating all the different events in his life including a reference to the time he was Batman which demonstrates perfectly how great the character is and can be. Oh, and we have the first appearance what seems to be Helena Bertinelli.

The art on the first section is handled by Javier Garron who does a pretty solid job with his expressive and semi-cartoony style but the best part without a doubt belongs to Mikel Janin who creates a really beautiful scene from Dick's perspective and makes me glad that he's the one in charge of the upcoming series.

Overall, this issue still delivered a satisfying promise of what's about to come. Bring in Grayson.
