In another life, things went different for Clark.
Jon and Martha are currently having problems with all the strange abilities that his son is developing. However, they know that they will have to support him no matter if the rest of the world sees him different.
This issue marks the beginning of Max Landis' take on the Superman mythos, about how things could have happened in another universe and at some point this was even called the "Anti-All-Star Superman" (and we will have to see if the story eventually comes to that).
And is definitely a pleasent surprise.
Landis focuses on Clark's childhood as most Superman stories would go but he brings enough personality about it that it quickly sets it apart from what you usually read. It might be the natural dialogue, the touching moments between father and son that Jon and Clark have or even the way how Clark sees himself as an actual alien, but it actually creates a quite enjoyable experience.
There are of course some classic Superman moments over the course of the issue and they're executed nicely. The characterization as mentioned, works perfectly for what it tries to do, Clark like how a normal kid would act (as normal as he can be of course), Jon is a common father, etc. Everything is pretty accurate.
Nick Dragotta is in charge of the artwork and is pretty nice looking with expressive character models and solid storytelling.
So yeah, I think I'm on board for this series so far. Nice job.
