A Dark Knight has returned but who?
The world is still dealing with the consequences of the last battle that almost destroyed it and everyone wonders, what happened to the Batman and his allies?
Well, I never thought I would see the day.
Mind you, this book hasn't been continually delayed like All-Star Batman and Robin or Batman: Europa but I never thought I would see it being launched before the former and along the latter. Frank Miller has a long story with this series, the first one is considered a classic that changed the comic industry while the second received mixed reactions for being different but still showed a lot of creativity concerning the DCU. So how does this new beginning fares?
Solidly I would say.
This time Miller is accompanied by Brian Azzarello is writing and it certainly shows. There are less of the classic Miller tropes that you would see and they're replaced for a more natural and believable narration that still shows a lot of personality.
That doesn't mean that there are not classic Miller moments of storytelling. The use of the media continues the traditional style that has been using during the whole series and the portrayal of the cast is still accurate due to their depiction in this particular universe. There are enough sub-plots going on and while there's not much content, is still a nice set-up.
Andy Kubert handles the artwork here and he does a splendid job at emulating Miller's style both in terms of storytelling and character models.
There's also a second story handled by the same creators focusing on The Atom and is actually a pretty creative take that is faithful to the characterization he received in the prequel. The art is handled by Miller himself and this might be one of his best works recently with a quite clean and polished look.
Interesting beginning, let's see how it continues.
