Some thoughts about Superman #7

Whatever happened to Superboy?

Something happened to Jon during his travels with Jor-El, something that forced them to stay together for years and now that he's older, he realizes something must be done.

Okay, let's get this out of the way: I hate this direction for Jon Kent.

And yes, I think this is the general opinion.

The idea of forcing a kid superhero, the kind of character that are rare in superhero comics, into an overused teenage superhero goes against everything this new Superboy represented which is not a surprise since Brian Bendis has gotten the character wrong pretty much since the beginning.

And this issue doesn't do anything to convince me of the contrary.

Jon explains why he stayed with his grandfather for so many years and how he ended in his current age... and it still doesn't make any sense whatsoever. He constantly says that staying with his grandpa was a mistake which is what pretty much what everyone was saying since all of this started, particularly readers who were screaming about how dumb this idea was.

Oh, but Bendis does realize this! He makes characters like Lois say: "What did your maniac grandfather did to you?" to which I respond: "What YOU allowed Lois! YOU let him go with him. YOU accompanied him and supported his decision of leaving the frikking the planet despite that he's just a child!" and the fact that she realize how stupid all of this was doesn't make things any better.

And Bendis makes fun of one of the most ridiculous justifications for this change of character! Lois reminds Jon that he left because the Teen Titans didn't accept him and he responds: "Oh yeah, hah!" basically mocking this absurd plot-point but what Bendis apparently doesn't realize is that ADDRESSING YOUR MISTAKES DOESN'T MAKE THEM DISAPPEAR! It was stupid back then and it's still stupid right now no matter how much you recognize it.

Also, the content is rather light and pretty much tells what everyone was expecting.

Ivan Reis, Brandon Peterson and Jason Fabok share art duties and their work is pretty solid for the most part although their styles kinda clash with one another.

Bad, bad, BAD! Not much hope for the future.
