Some thoughts about Guardians of the Galaxy

One of the most terrible threats that has ever existed is about to put the galaxy in danger and if their protectors are not able to save them they will have to depend on more unusual heroes.

Peter Quill was abducted when he was a kid by an alien gang called the Ravagers after suffering a personal loss, now calling himself Star-Lord he's dedicated to search personal gain in any way possible. However, after finding himself in the middle of a great disaster provoked by a terrorist called Ronan the Accuser, he will be forced to join other people as selfish as him to see if this finally can make him start facing troubles instead of running from them.

How can you make a superhero team as popular as The Avengers in the big screen?

How about doing everything what the aforementioned did, but better?

I'm not kidding.

Before going further, let's explain a bit about the background of this movie first. This film is based on the most popular cosmic team from the Marvel universe, especifically the version that was created after the event called "Annihilation: Conquest" which was also a sequel of the popular crossover "Annihilation" created by Keith Giffen.  This group in particular was handled by writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (called "DnA" by the fans) and focused on exciting sci-fi adventures witha  huge emphasis on epic stories just like the one that started their existence.

Of course Marvel Studios saw the opportunity to capitalize in this franchise so they decided to give it a chance with director James Gunn in charge of it and thank God they did.

Let's talk about the story, it's nothing that we haven't seen before but then again, neither was The Avengers. A huge threat it's coming to destroy everything and a group of reluctant heroes join together to stop it despite of their differences, typical comic book stuff.

However, the most important factor as usual is the execution and that's where this movie especially succeeds.

Now it's necessary to mention the most relevant aspect about what makes this movie so good: The cast. Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill/Star-Lord as the kind of Han Solo/mercenary character that is usually so prevalent in these type of cosmic stories, the difference being that Pratt obviously plays him as a joke, a man who thinks himself more important than he actually is and goes full with that role. Peter Quill might not be as famous as he would like but he's still quite competent and likable despite of showing some not so admirable traits which allows to a lot of interesting dynamics with the rest of the cast.

Speaking of which, they're fantastic. Zoe Saldana is in the role of Gamora and she interprets her as tough as nails, warrior woman who has some personal sins she wants to atone and she does a wonderful job at that. Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer was also a pleasent surprise since I never thought that I would be happy of seeing WWE's "Batista" in this kind of movie but he handles perfectly Drax as a stoic man who is searching for vengeance after the death of his family and is much more serious than the rest of his colleagues. Rocket Raccoon is obviously a CGI creature but works perfectly thanks to Bradley Cooper's voice who is able to capture his ridiculeness splendidly. Groot by Vin Diesel might be something that doesn't sound much logical at first but it's actually an interesting role due to the expressions that the actor is able to develope for the creature.

In terms of antagonists, I think they did an excellent job for this entry. Ronan the Accuser works great as a believable but not so huge threat for the cosmic side of the Marvel universe in this first movie and Lee Pace handles him pretty well as a determined being who is looking to exterminate all his enemies. Nebula is also an interesting villain played by Karen Gillan who presents a compelling challenge for Gamora. It's also bears to mention that they made the right decision by introducing Thanos in this film to start building-up anticipation to a more important role in the future.

All these characters wouldn't have worked as well without their great personality and that's where this movie impressed me the most. The main cast are a great set of well-developed heroes with their different motivations and traits, each one of them is unique in their own way. The ones who are destined to become the most popular are definitely Rocket Raccoon and Groot since they had some of the most memorable moments in this film, although I would say that Drax is not far behind.

The humour is hilarious and it's obvious that the director, writers and actors had a lot of fun by creating all the different interactions between the characters with all the inventive jokes that don't feel out of place at all despite of playing in such a serious environment. This actually helped to make the audience closer to the protagonists and much more invested in their success.

The pacing is quite engaging, there's no dull moment in this story. Everything builds-up perfectly until the final battle with Ronan and you don't feel that any scene was wasted until its arrival.

The effects are beautiful. The battles are pretty real and spectacular and they absolutely bring the kind of "epic" tone that was needed for a movie of this scale.

So, did I like this movie?

What do you need me to spell it?

I love this movie, I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is pretty much this year's The Avengers for the comic genre.

Guardians of the Galaxy works so well in so many levels that I would say that it's superior than the film which I'm comparing it to, mostly because I'm not that invested in these characters as much as the most famous ones who appeared in The Avengers and this movie actually me care for them.

However, that's not the only aspect where I think this film is better since this story in particular focused a lot in worldbuilding and planted the seeds for futures stories like mentions of the Nova Corps, the Infinity Gems, the Kree Empire, Thanos, etc. So many sub-plots and all of them were so satisfying.

Do you want to know how much I love this movie? This is the only superhero film from the year that actually forces me to watch it again. Not even Captain America: The Winter Soldier managed to do that and I really liked that one too.

What are you waiting for? If you haven't seen this movie yet I highly recommend you to do so, you won't be disappointed.
