Some thoughts about Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #1

Jimmy Olsen has a weird life.

People at the Daily Planet are tired of having to endure the bizarre events in Jimmy's daily routing and thus they're taking him to another place but that could be for the worse.

A new series begins from the most unexpected sources. Most people might know Jimmy Olsen from his role as part of Superman's supporting cast but he actually has a long history of having weird adventures himself where he turned into strange creatures and faced equally strange encounters. Now Matt Fraction of all people is willing to create a new take from that angle, Fraction is mostly famous for his work at Marvel where he's mostly known for his quirky style (Check out his Hawkeye run for that) and I believe he was the right choice for this book.

In fact the story opens with Fraction exploring the history behind Jimmy's own family and mythos which is something not that suprising considering that Fraction did it too during his Immortal Iron Fist run (which had a more serious tone admitedly) but we get quickly over that to start with one of Jimmy's classic Silver Age transformations where he becomes a giant turtle and Superman is forced to save him. This is appropriate I believe since Fraction is willing to combine compelling aspects along with crazy comic sequences.

This is further explored once that we learn that these events put the Daily Planet at risk which is also a logical conclusion considering Jimmy's history with the place and Fraction is not afraid of breaking the 4th wall like when Clark winks at readers hinting at his secret identity while people around him wonder what the hell is he doing. Again, classic Fraction quirky stuff.

The cliffhanger is intriguing enough and makes me wonder where they're taking things from here.

Steve Lieber handles the art and he's also a good choice for the book due to his clean semi-cartoony style that has a lot of personality and follows the story perfectly.

Promising overall, let's see how it continues.
