Some thoughts about Martian Manhunter #12

Martian Manhunter will have to save the world from himself.

J'onn is ready to face the threat of Mars. However, there's a last mystery to unveil, the true nature of the invasion and multiple personalities that appeared and what they mean for J'onn.

This series comes to an end and this issue pretty much summarizes a lot of the problems I had with it.

Rob Williams arrives with the final chapter by focusing on the last battle between J'onn and the invasion. His personalities are dying and is up to him to stop the monsters from Mars to destroy the Earth.

... Psyche!

You thought it was going to be so logical and straightforward? Well, you were wrong good sir because it wouldn't be Williams if he didn't try to make the story more convoluted... I mean complex!

It turns out that there was never an invasion at all, there was never a true danger coming from outside. It was all in J'onn's head literally! He apparently went insane years ago and therefore he created the invasion himself and his multiple versions because he missed Mars so much.

You see, I don't even know why we needed this. I don't even know why Williams needed to implement this twist at the last second. The other things that happened in this story weren't enough? Wasn't it enough to implement a simple yet satisfying final battle the close the story?

That's not the only reason why this bothers me. The characters had their own different quirks but their personalities were not really that complex and once that you realize that they were never important, that they were never real then you start realizing that this story is completely pointless. Hell, J'onn pretty much gets rid of one his personalities in the simplest way possible completely disregarding her whole existence. She was never relevant, none of this was ever relevant!

This is the perfect definition of PRETENTIOUS!

I should add that I'm not a fan of how J'onn is apparently crazy now and he caused a lot of destruction because of it. The final page is not really satisfactory at all either.

Ben Oliver handles the artwork and is not bad, the characters are expressive enough but some of the backgrounds are lacking.

I honestly feel like I've wasted my time with this series, probably because I did.
