Some thoughts about Gotham by Midnight #1

What happens in the darkest places of Gotham City?

Jim Corrigan has found a profession that suits him best, a detective focused on the strangest events that occur in this terrifying city. That couldn't be more true once that they find out that there's horrible being threatening children's lives.

This issue marks the beginning of this new series focusing on one of DC's most powerful characters, Jim Corrigan also known as The Spectre. However, author Ray Fawkes has decided to go for a different route from what we're accustomed to with this character and so far I would say is successful.

The writer has decided to explore more of the supernatural side of this particular city but he mostly concentrates in the investigation work for this chapter. Is necessary to mention that while The Spectre is indeed the main character, Jim Corrigan actually doesn't appear in that identity and that presents a lot of opportunities for character work.

The mystery is a pretty compelling one that becomes more interesting and scarier with each page, in fact from the first page you're able to notice that you're not reading your typical Batman book.

That's all thanks to the presentation. Since the beginning you're automatically immersed in the atmosphere of this book due to its unique dark and creepy tone which creates a lot of personality for the story.

This wouldn't be possible without Ben Templesmith's pencils which are perfect for this kind of book. His work is pretty distinctive especially compared to what we're used to see in mainstream comics, it alows for really compelling scenes full of suspenseful moments.

So overall, this is a pretty satisfactory first issue. I'm glad that it delivered
