Can someone stop the damage?
A soldier has been turned into a weapon of mass destruction and the only way to stop him is by destroying him.
Here it is, the first of the Metal spinoffs that are mean to introduce a new age of heroes for the DCU, pretty similar to the Bloodlines event from the 90s. Now is up to Robert Venditti and Tony Daniel to present a brand new, compelling and intriguing enough character to readers.
And sadly the don't do a really good job here.
Is not really bad, there's a very classic tone here, about a man who is turned into a monster against his will and while it might sound derivative at times, it still shows enough interesting ideas to be invested into, particularly the ones the surround the protagonist since it presents new characters and organizations that are connected to the bigger DCU and are supposed to have big ramifications for the future.
THE PROBLEM is that this is basically just a prologue of everything that is about to come. We don't know exactly what happened to the protagonist to become this way aside from what is told to us in the form of exposition, is just a big wave of destruction to show how dangerous he can be in terms of scale which ultimately just offers a pretty light in content initial chapter and worst of all, it doesn't show why we should be invested in this main character in particular since his personality is not depicted appropriately to make you care about him, we don't know the kind of man he is yet.
Daniel's artwork is fantastic though, he's able to show all the destruction going on here in an spectacular manner and with a beautiful style.
Other than that, I was expecting much, much more. I don't think it serves as an introductory chapter and that's the worst it can happen to a new series but let's see how it continues.
