Who is covering the secrets of China?
Laney Lan has been investigating about the Justice League of China since their creation and now she's decided to uncover all the mysteries that they're hiding.
A new writer appears and the quality fortunately is still pretty consistent.
Mariko Tamaki replaces Gene Luen Yang in this series and fortunately she seems to have the right vision for it so far. I've been a fan of her work since the miniseries Supergirl: Being Super which showed great and realistic character work and this is perfectly reflected in this opening chapter. This time the focus goes to one of the most ignored characters in the cast, Laney Lan (Lois Lane's Chinese analogue) and makes her more interesting than ever, Tamaki shows all the events that happen in her life that motivated her to keep investigating about the superheroes from her nation, best of all is that all of this events seem pretty realistic which is quite weird coming from this series that mostly concentrated on supernatural events.
The plot doesn't progress much and that's something typical from Tamaki's work as well. She tends to fixate mostly on character development but that's not to say that there isn't a story here but is one that seems like is going to progress very slowly and hopefully future chapters manage to create more revelations and worldbuilding.
Brent Peeples handles the art and once again, is decent enough, not particularly great but not bad, still not a fan of the rough style but he seems to be getting better.
Promising beginning, hope to see more like this.
