What will cause The Flashes go to war?
People are investigating the mysterious deaths of Eobard Thawne while in the present, Wally is trying to get his life back and all of this is connected.
An Annual that serves as a prologue for the upcoming event Flash War and let me tell you that it has surpassed all my expectations.
For one, Joshua Williamson uses this format to create an oversized story focusing on Wally and some of the most prominent issues that he has been facing lately, about how he is not taking time to be Wally West again because the most important people in his life don't remember him. This creates a pretty solid character development that involves relevant characters connected to his history which brings a good sense of continuity and also manages to move a few characters forward which is the best I can ask for in a story.
The best part comes from the future segments though since Williamson implements all the ideas he has been developing concerning Thawne and also uses a few of Geoff Johns' creations as always like The Renegades from the 25th Century. All of this escalates perfectly towards the shocking ending where the writer tries to trick you that Thawne is back once again but the dialogue gets immediately familiar and the last page brings one of the most pleasent surprises in recent memory which is especially good for fans of Wally West's time as The Flash.
Howard Porter is in charge of the art from the future section and he's perfect for the story, especially because of its focus on Wally considering Porter's own history with the title, the amount of energy that he injects is admirable. Christian Duce's present segments are also greatly done thanks to his beautiful characters.
Great stuff, excited to see where this is going.
