Can Superman give a little hope to these kids?
Children from the hospital are big fans of Superman and the greatest hero in the world is decided to make every day they have count.
Well, this definitely worked much better than previous stories.
Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason offer an one-and-done story that touches classic Superman themes in a heartwarming way. The issue opens with a stereotypical fight against supervillains but its intention becomes clear once that the writers decide to contrast it with a much more serious and real issue: Kids who suffer from cancer. The way how Superman interacts with them shows how compassionate and kind the hero can be and gave me a big smile in every scene all of them appear.
Things get even better once that the children go to the Justice League HQ and talk to the rest of the team, even Batman demonstrates some fun and charming moments. All of this leads to a bittersweet final segment that made me pretty emotional.
Barry Kitson handles the artwork and is pretty solid thanks to clean style and expressive characters.
Good stuff, I wish the writers would deliver more tales like this.
