Can Mister Miracle handle the responsibility of a New God?
Highfather has been killed and is up to Scott and Barda to stop the conflict with Darkseid once for all, even if that means ending with someone close to them.
Interesting read but not without its issues.
Tom King continues his story by developing the ideas that he introduced during the first issue while also adding new ones. The characterization works nicely since King tries to give a new twist to the classic Kirby themes and in some cases making them even stronger like the huge emphasis in the relationships between the characters. There's a lot of emotion in several scenes where the characters interact and makes their connection much more compelling, this is not only limited to Scott and Barda but is quite obvious in the brotherly rivalry between Scott and Orion and surprisingly, the mother/son dynamic between Granny Goodness and Scott.
THAT BEING SAID, King's ovewhelming style is starting to get more notorious to the point that it gets obnoxious. Especially in terms of the dialogue which, while it doesn't contain the usual repetition, is still pretty unnatural and awkward at times. Some of the scenes are depicted in unnatural manners as well, some of them to convey emotion but at times they don't get the expected response.
Mitch Gerards is in charge of the art and his work is still pretty impressive in terms of tone and storytelling. I can't find any fault in the beautiful settings he creates.
Not as strong as the first issue but let's see where this goes.
