Some thoughts about Detective Comics #950

What does the future hold for Batman and his team?

Cassandra Cain is trying to find her true purpose, Azrael is exploring more about the nature of his abilities and Batman is preparing for a war that no else sees.

Oversized special right here and for the most part, it does a solid job at creating interest in the upcoming storyline.

James Tynion IV divides this issue in three stories. The first one focuses on Cassandra and her desire to become something else, something more than what she was destined to be. Is a compelling character study that shows a lot of her own motivations as well as her connection to other members of the cast. The problem is that the third-person narration gets old pretty quickly and there's nobody who does it so its presence can be awkward. Marcio Takara handles the artwork and is solid with good looking characters although the storytelling might not be the best.

The second segment is about Azrael and showcases more about his personality, background and place on the team. The way how they connect his motivations to his religion is decent enough and his interactions with Batwing are nicely done. Alvaro Martinez handles the artwork and is probably the best looking of the bunch full of beautiful characters and strong scenarios.

The final story belongs to Batman himself and what is going to happen soon. Is obvious that Tynion is preparing a big story soon and this chapter does a good job at building-up to it. Eddy Barrows handles the artwork and his style is once again pretty fitting thanks to its dark tone.

This was an enjoyable issue overall, hope the upcoming storyline is just as good.
