Some thoughts about Transformers #1

What is the origin of the war?

Orion Pax is doing his best to keep everything at peace in Cybertron but there are increasing conflicts including a mysterious threat that is affecting everyone.

And here we go again.

It seems almost yesterday when the first IDW Transformers continuity was established... no wait, is actually longer than that, is just that the most recent and best remembered version of the universe was created not so long ago pretty much starting with Nick Roche's Last Stand of the Wreckers miniseries and maintained with ongoing titles like James Roberts' More than Meets the Eye gaining big acclaim. That being said, the previous continuity ultimately went for the worst towards the end and not even Roberts was able to make a good conclusion to his work (Roche still did well though) so a reboot is something that I greatly appreciate at this point. Handled by newcomer Brian Ruckley, does this opening deliver an interesting premise?

Well, so far is interesting enough at least.

The issue begins convincingly with a brand new Transformer basically serving as the eyes of the reader who is amazed by the world around (which I think is also a reference to how the author is feeling). You also have the classic staples like Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee and Windblade I guess (Yeah, she has gotten quite the status in recent years). The characterization for both Optimus and Megatron seems heavily inspired by their previous portrayals in the last continuity where their different beliefs made them get into conflict, mind you, it seems like this time they have a much closer relationship by now since they're referred to each other as "old friends" which might lead to interesting developments.

There's also an air of mystery around the plot because there's an incoming danger that could possibly escalate the conflict between the Autobots and the Ascenticons (who are clearly going to become the Decepticons) much quicker. The writing itself does a good job at revealing the plot without being too much exposition which is always appreciated, is pretty solid in that regard. If I had to complaint about something is that most of the cast doesn't show much personality yet and the issue doesn't have much content but I guess is better to wait a bit.

Angel Hernandez and Cachet Whitman share the pencils and their work is really solid in terms of storytelling and character models, speaking as a collector, I love that the Transformers who appear here are reminiscent of their look from the recent toy line.

Good beginning overall, hope things get even better.
