Some thoughts about Pearl #1

What's happening in Pearl's world?

Pearl is trying to hide something from his friends, a mission that could put her and everyone else in peril.

Here it is people, the reunion between Brian Bendis and Michael Gaydos in a brand new title, this time for the new DC line Jinxworld. The creators of Jessica Jones (and yes, the cover itself states that despite that it would be more appropriate to say that they're the creators of the series Alias where Jessica Jones debuted) have produced quality stories for years and while the already mentioned work were their peak in my opinion, I think this is still a decent beginning.

We're immediately introduced to Pearl and the mystery surrounding her past and the strange the tattoos she wears. Mind you, there are not a lot of revelations here but Bendis creates a pretty intriguing narrative, I would say even quite unconventional for him in which he explores different aspects of the protagonist's background that gives us a few hints about who she truly is and the bizarre events and people she's forced to work with. The tattoos seem like they play a key role in the plot and hopefully this will be further developed in the future.

The thing is that if you're too familiar with Bendis' work, his dialogue can be instantly recognizable and sometimes annoying, is not particularly bad and at times it even sounds realistic but his style of writing can also be tiring. The plot also doesn't offer too many explanations and that could be disappointing for new readers.

Gaydos' artwork is pretty solid. It can look stiff at times but I believe his semi-realistic style is really good for the kind of direction that Bendis is taking and the characters are still really expressive.

There's a second segment by Bendis himself about none other than Batman, the end of Batman to be especific and it surprisingly works much better than the main feature thanks to the twist at the end. Gaydos' pencils continue to rock.

Not bad but I hope the next issue offers more revelations.
