Some thoughts about Green Arrow #43

Who is going to bring justice to Seattle?

Oliver's life is finally going well, he's getting along with his loved ones and has new responsibilities with the Justice League but once that a new criminal appears, he will realize his life is still far from perfect.

Julie and Shawna Benson's run officially begins here. As some of you might recall, I quite digged their initial work in the last Annual and so I was anticipating this new direction they're bringing to the book and I'm happy to say that so far they don't disappoint.

The series opens with the first major plot-point it was introduced in this series since the new writers' arrival, that Green Arrow was trusted by the Justice League with a mysterious box. Surprisingly enough though, the story is barely centered around that and I'm thankful for it since I prefer when writers do their own stories instead of following editorial mandates.

That being said, the Bensons implement that plot-thread in an interesting manner by making Roy closer to Ollie in a way that is more reminiscent to the classic continuity which I guess works for the better since their old relationship was always one of their strongest points. Speaking of relationships, the dynamic between Ollie and Dinah is handled solidly which is not surprising since, while I thought Bensons' Birds of Prey run was pretty flawed, I always liked their take on Dinah, she's very likable here (especially compared to how Ben Percy wrote her, ugh). The fun dialogue certainly contributes to this a lot.

The theme of the story about society delivering their own sense of justice fits perfectly in Green Arrow and fortunately both Ollie and Dinah realize that the villain is completely wrong in his literal execution (and shows how different Dinah is here because you just know that Percy's Dinah would have found some valuable points in the killer's actions). The cliffhanger concerning this is also pretty exciting.

Javier Fernandez shows his skills here in art duties and I'm glad since he has always been pretty good in terms of storytelling and follows the script clearly.

Pretty promising overall, hope it continues this way.
