Some thoughts about Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell

Black Canary and Zatanna, the fishnet ladies are back on one of their craziest adventures yet.

Since the time they first met, Dinah Lance and Zatanna Zatara quickly became friends despite of their different personalities and helped one another over the course of the years. Now, both will have to face one of the most dangerous witchs in the world and her desire for power and revenge... and having fun in the proccess!

This is the long awaited OGNs written by Paul Dini based on two of the most popular superheroines from the DCU. The author has been working on this premise for years and finally he is able to tell the story he has been dying to tell, does he succeeds at it?

Well, at least in terms of characterization he does, he completely succeeds.

Talking about the characters individually first, the author immediately sold me in the portrayal of both women, but the one that shocked me the most due to how incredibly entertaining it was, was Black Canary's.

"You're interrupting my T'ai Chi".

Those lines, just those first lines of dialogue made me fall in love with this interpretation of Dinah Lance and it doesn't end at that, she's also a quite competent and hilarious character who doesn't take herself seriously and is pretty cool with the kind of person she is. I'm serious, this is the best portrayal from this heroine I've seen in years and makes me wish that we had this Black Canary on the New 52. Someday, maybe someday.

Zatanna is not far behind in terms of characterization though. She's portrayed a quite adorkable and awkward girl who is still a newbie in the superhero businness but is still able to proof how capable she is. Another great interpretation.

And the relationship between the two of them is probably the best aspect. Their friendship is something pretty believable for two people who have known each other for years, every conversation between is hilarious and produces a lot of charming moments.

There are several mentions and appearances from the rest of the DCU. It's necessary to mention that this story is set in the pre-New 52 universe so we will see a lot of the old designs from characters like Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and Superman so fans who are nostalgic for that time will be pretty glad at seeing them again.

The story itself is pretty simple, as well as the villain, but the highlight is both the protagonists and their dynamic and based on that Dini does a wonderful job.

Joe Quinones handles the artwork and is gorgeous. He's able to capture the expressions of both characters perfectly as well as depicting every moment adequately, the personality he injects to the whole issue is great too.

A quite satisfying OGN and one that made me fall in love again with these women.
