Evil is coming.
Zatanna is trying to get used to her new friends but many of them could be pretty dangerous for her.
This series continues and it still manages to be quite compelling.
Alisa Kwitney brings a new installment where she continues to explore the setting of Mystik U and while the magical aspect of it is interesting, the best part comes from the interactions between the characters. The supernatural theme of the book is well-exploited and that is mostly because of the different and obscure characters from the mystical side of the DCU that this story presents. Dr. E, Mr. Occult among others bring the kind of personality that a Harry Potter-inspired direction like this requires, even bizarre creatures like Plop present a much needed weird presence that is pretty similar to the stories from the classic Vertigo line.
Then again, the plot truly shines when it focuses on the characterization. Zatanna works fine as the protagonist but others members of the cast like Sebastian Faust showcase a pretty complex case where a man tries to literally fight against his inner demons (although at times he seems like a stereotypical angsty male love interest from a girl novel), Enchantress seems to be developing into something more intriguing based on her double personality while Plop demonstrates more depth due to their low self-steem. All of this is emphasized during their multiple conversations and is presented pretty naturally thanks to solid dialogue and likable portrayals.
Mike Norton's artwork is simply perfect thanks to his beautiful and clean style that gets the best from character expressions and crazy scenarios.
Good read, more like this please.
