Is Mera ready to be the Queen of Atlantis?
Mera's last encounter in the ocean made her pretty vulnerable and now she will have to deal with all sort of threats without her powers. However, that's the least of her concerns since an old and powerful enemy has come back.
This is it people, I don't care if is simply a miniseries, I've been waiting for a book with Mera in the starring role for a while and fortunately is handled by the same writer who has done such a great job with her in the main Aquaman series.
Dan Abnett opens this title by focusing on the ramifications of the latest arc in Aquaman with Mera losing her control over water and most of her other abilities while also being forced to become the new leader of Atlantis. The character work is one of the better points here since the story heavily focuses on the personal struggles that Mera has to endure due to how her new role as Queen of Atlantis is clashing with her original mission of destroying them and their King. Speaking of which, Arthur is heavily present here, at least in Mera's memories and this helps to cement how strong their relationship is.
Best of all is that Abnett is implementing many of the ideas that Geoff Johns left unfinished like what happened to Ocean Master who is now living a peaceful life on the surface which obviously comes in conflict with the new status quo in Atlantis. Not to mention other references like Nereus and what could finally lead to the event Rise of the Seven Seas that was teased way too long ago. I have a few issues with the third person narration but doesn't become too obtrusive.
Lan Medina handles the art and is really good looking thanks to the clean style and solid character models.
Pretty promising beginning. Hope the next one arrives soon.
