Can a God be changed?
The world is in chaos since every force from every nation are confronting each other, something that Doctor Manhattan can't help but reminisce and now the only hope comes from a being who is constant among the Multiverse.
Believe it or not, Doomsday Clock has finally come an end. It has been an erratic release to say the least because of the multiple times the title has been delayed but if there's something that has never changed is its quality and I'm ecstatic to say that as far as conclusions go, this is the most satisfying one in recent years.
Geoff Johns brings the final chapter where he pretty much puts everyone in conflict. Jon simply seeing everything without intervening as usual and Superman trying to do the opposite. It's a great contrast between the personalities of the two, one of the most obvious examples of the themes concerning both characters that Johns has been implementing over the course of this work and it works perfectly. Most importantly though, is the ultimate decision that Jon takes, something that is inspired by Clark appropriately enough which changes the complete state of the DCU.
Yes, there are big changes going on here in terms of continuity since once again, Johns reboots history and I believe is for the better in this case. It goes to a more familiar vision of the DCU, one that includes all the classic characters that people have been asking for and they all come back in a triumphant way. I can't help but compare this to how Scott Snyder has been doing something similar in Justice League but the big difference here is that Johns actually knows how to execute perfectly to create big and satisfying moments. The hope for this world is bigger than ever now.
Of course the classic Watchmen characters receive a good portrayal. Jon being the most prominent here because of how much he changes, the new Rorschach is pretty much the same black and white as the old one but improved, Ozymandias gets what he deserves and the Comedian meets his never changing fate. Even the Watchmen universe is change in a way that promises interesting things for the future.
And the references, my God, the references. There are a lot of characters appearing here, not only classic ones but also heroes from other countries created by Grant Morrison and even Johns himself, it makes the story feel bigger.
Gary Frank returns to art duties and is still amazing with great storytelling and attention to detail from every side.
How good is this? It actually makes me question if I should put this in my Top Ten Best DC Comics of 2019 list despite that doesn't have the usual requirements but I think there's a way to make it fit. I just love this book so much.
