Some thoughts about Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child #1

What is the biggest threat in the universe?

Lara is trying to teach her brother how to use his immense powers and what better way to test them against a God?

Frank Miller returns with one of his most famous creations. The Dark Knight Returns universe is a favorite of him and while many spinoffs were not as successful, there's always more interesting stuff to explore.

If you know Miller's work you know what to expect: Political satire, melodramatic narration and a considerable amount of sexism in the mix, fortunately though, this story doesn't present much of the last one and quite a bit of the first two. This is a pretty political comic which is emphasized on Trump's Government and how many troubles it causes to society, even an already problematic one like in the Dark Knight universe. I'm personally tired of Trump's commentary and such but Miller makes it a bit more entertaining by going completely over the top, creating comparisons to the Joker and his chaos, and being more fun than anything else.

The melodramatic narration can take you out of the story, particularly during the early pages but once that Darkseid arrives, everything starts to sound better, probably because Miller's grandiose style can be compared to Jack Kirby's in a way and fits Darkseid fine enough. Not to mention that he makes his level of threat and the powers of the recently introduced character, Jonathan, much bigger in scope.

Rafael Grampa handles the art and he does a pretty good job not only at following Miller's script but also at channeling Miller's rough artstyle along with his own detailed tone.

Fine enough I would say, not a bad return.
