How will Lois Lane handle the death of her father?
Sam Lane has passed away after the Event Leviathan and now Lois can't help but remember the complicated relationship she had with him.
Once again, this is mostly character-centric but it's pretty fitting considering what happened.
Greg Rucka decides to take a rest from his ongoing plot to focus on the funeral of Sam Lane and how that affects Lois. This obviously makes the flow of the already slow story even slower but it works wonderfully from a character standpoint. The dynamic between Lois and Sam is emphasized here via flashbacks showing how they usually disagreed with one another but thankfully, Rucka shows that they were more complex than that.
Going from Lois' teenage years through her adult life and her marriage with Clark, it showcases Sam's reaction to each of those events and demonstrates he was not always perfect but he ultimately really cared for Lois in his own way despite he was not always able to act the best way. This is pretty much the kind of father portrayal that I prefer and I'm glad the writer went this way instead of going for the "parents are EVIL" route that so many authors sadly choose these days.
Mike Perkins' semi-realistic artwork is once again perfect to depict expressions and for the tone of the theme.
Good read, one of the best so far.
