Is Hawkman ready to return?
Carter is suffering the attack of the Dark Multiverse just like many others but he will need to find the strenght to rise above them and fight for his lives.
This is it people, the proper return of Jeff Lemire to DC Comics. As you might know, I'm a huge Lemire fan and I tend to follow all of his books very closely so the idea of him working on a character with tons of potential like Hawkman was impossible to resist.
The thing is that I don't think this issue does a good enough job at gaining attention for the character.
I mean, Lemire is clearly setting-up plot-points for his upcoming Hawkman series, plot-points that are strongly related to Carter's multiple lives that are probably going to be revealed over the course of the next book and will affect his future significantly. This is a pretty good premise and fits Lemire's character and continuity-focused writing perfectly, it has a lot of promise.
The thing is that this issue is just pure prologue. Lemire is creating a mystery to make people intrigued about what's coming next but offers barely any answers yet which is probably not the best way to generate hype for the new book. The fact that this is a Metal tie-in doesn't help since this was forced to be connected to that event and ended pretty abruptly.
Bryan Hitch handles the art and is really solid, probably one of his best efforts recently with a pretty cinematic feel and full of expressive characters.
Not bad but it could have been better. Hope the proper series is an improvement.
